Why I designed it
A puppy's first harness matters more than people realise. It shapes how they feel about walks, about being handled, about wearing kit at all – and if it's uncomfortable or hard to put on, you notice it in how they behave for a long time afterwards.
I wanted to create something that made that first experience as positive as possible. Something soft enough that a puppy barely notices it's there, but structured enough to fit properly and last beyond the first few months. The padding wasn't just about comfort – it was about making sure the harness never digs in, never rubs, and never gives a puppy a reason to resist it.
The Staey Puppy Edit started with this harness. Everything else in the collection grew around the idea that the first products a puppy owner reaches for should be the best ones.
What it took to get it right
Designing a harness soft enough for a puppy without losing structure took more work than we expected. Early versions were either too padded and ended up feeling bulky on a very small dog, or too minimal to offer the protection a puppy's delicate joints actually need.
We went through several rounds of adjusting the padding placement and thickness – finding the balance between something that feels genuinely gentle against the skin and something that still holds its shape and sits correctly on the dog. Getting the fit right at the smallest sizes was particularly challenging, since even small differences in the cut make a big difference when the dog weighs only a few kilos.
The Staey logo embossed onto the harness also took careful consideration at this scale – it needed to feel intentional and considered, not like an afterthought on a product built for the smallest dogs. When it all came together, the harness felt exactly as it was meant to: soft, secure, and unmistakably Staey.

My story
Hi, I’m Noa – designer and founder of Staey. I live in Denmark with my dog Alba, and I started Staey because I was tired of choosing between functionality and aesthetics.
Every Staey design starts with real moments from my life with my own Alba. I sketch the first ideas at my kitchen table, and my team and I test, tweak and adjust until it works – for your dog and for you. Because practical can (and should) look beautiful.
